WYCROFT PINOT NOIR
Wycroft offers small volumes of premium pinot noir from a boutique vineyard in one of the new world’s leading pinot noir regions.
Wycroft combines its unique micro-climate, old world winemaking traditions and new world expertise.
The top Dijon clones are close-planted on low fruiting wires in the intensive Burgundian manner, Low cropping levels ensures only premium fruit is harvested. The vines are hand-tended under the guidance of leading viticulturist Nick Hoskins.
The challenge of managing such a sensitive grape variety in cool climate conditions is rewarded by wines with an intense bouquet and long, lingering flavours. The strong demand from the mail order buyers and discerning pinotphiles, combined with allocations to fine dining restaurants, leading cafes and gastro pubs, early buying of both Wycroft labels is recommended.
Situated 4km west of the Wairarapa town of Masterton, Wycroft vineyard is on the silt/loam and gravel terrace built up by the adjoining Waipoua River. It is tucked under the Tararua Mountains, and experiences long, warm summers with a high diurnal temperature range, followed by crisp winters under the snow-capped peaks.. By such contrasts are great grapes grown.
The Masterton district pioneered New Zealand’s first successful vineyard in the late 19th century until the prohibition movement forced its closure. Only in the last 30 years have vineyards been replanted in Masterton, nearby Gladstone and Martinborough, and the region is now a world-recognised producer of fine wines.
